The fourth chapter contains a brief adventure - The House of Lament - as well as a mix of guidance for DMs when running a horror campaign (including real-world safety mechanisms for players) and new mechanics for Curses, Fear and Stress, Haunted Traps, and Survivors. The third chapter is its longest - a gazetteer of sorts that provides detailed multi-page listings for 17 Domains of Dread, brief descriptions of another 22 Domains, and biographies of about a dozen NPCs that could be recurring characters in a Ravenloft campaign. The second section is a chapter on creating a custom Domain of Dread that serves as laying the groundwork for how the world of Ravenloft works. The first chapter is all about character creation and contains two new subclasses, three new lineages, new backgrounds and trinkets, and a new Dark Gift mechanic that provides players with optional abilities that come at a thematic or mechanical cost. The book is split into five parts, each of which contains different tools to help bring Ravenloft to life at the table. As a Vistani, she has the powers of the Evil Eye and making Vistani curses. Now, the rest of Ravenloft is "reborn" in Fifth Edition in Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft, a campaign-setting book that provides major updates to several popular Domains of Dread in addition to providing new player options and tools for DMs. She can cast spells as a 7th level wizard and is of Chaotic Good alignment. ArtĮmzerelda has her own game statistics block. Įmzerelda d'Avenir travels around in her Magic Wagon. Like Eva, Emzerelda can perform tarokka card readings herself. Ezmerelda may also be randomly encountered on the roads of Barovia or in Castle Ravenloft She joins with the player characters much more readily than her loner mentor.Įmzerelda may be revealed by the tarokka card reading of Madame Eva to be Strahd's Enemy. In the latter case, she says as one of the Abbot's special guests, having befriended him but actually using the Abbey as a good place to ambush Strahd, though if encountered here and the player characters seem devoted to Strahd's destruction, she readily joins with them and gives up her old plans. She be encountered operating out of Van Richten's Tower or the Abbey of Saint Markovia. In this module, Ezmerelda seeks to find van Richten, or, barring that, to continue his work of destroying Strahd. In the meantime, Ezmerelda heard rumors about her former mentor's travel to Barovia to take out Strahd, and she traveled to Barovia to find van Richten, eventually setting up shop in his old tower. van Richten made Khazan's old tower his own for a time, before moving on to Vallaki and setting up shop there. Rictavio came to Barovia in the guise of Rictavio and set up shop at a then abandoned tower formerly belonging to the wizard Khazan. van Richten set his sights upon the destruction of Strahd. However, their relationship frayed after a couple of years, and at, Ezmerelda's suggestion, they left each other's company amicably. In fact, one of them, Ezmerelda appeared to him one day and expressed her remorse, eventually becoming van Richten's student in monster hunting. One key difference is that he did not wholesale murder the Vistani that kidnapped his son Erasmus van Richten. van Richten's early history before he came a monster hunter remains the same.
